Design a Cupcake in Cricut Design Space + Free SVG & DXF Cutting File

I have a tasty tutorial today, it’s so tasty you will want to climb in to your computer screen and take a bite out of it……okay, that may be a little extreme, but if you like cupcakes and you love to design in Cricut Design Space. You’re in the right place!

I’ve also included a yummy freebie to download at the end of this tutorial…..I know, I’m just too generous!

First, open Cricut Design Space and go to ‘Create New Project.’

1; Using the ‘Basic Shapes’ option, select Pentagon from the list.

You can Make the Pentagon any size you want.

Draw a rectangle and position it so it covers the top half of the Pentagon, as shown.

Select both the Rectangle and Pentagon and click on the slice tool.

Delete the excess parts so your left with a similar shape to what is in the Image below.

Duplicate this shape and move it to one side (or you can hide it by clicking on the eye next to the shape in the layers panel)

2; Use the square tool to draw some vertical rectangles(you can draw one and duplicate the rest), position them on top of the shape you have just created. (I’ll call that the ‘base shape from now on)

Now, as Cricut Design Space can only slice 2 layers at a time, to make the rectangles all one layer, draw a horizontal rectangle and place it across the top of the vertical rectangles, select all the rectangles and click weld. This will make them all one layer.

 

Select the newly welded rectangle layer and the base shape created from the pentagon.

Click Slice

Click and drag the outer part of the original shape, you should end up with something that looks like the stripes below. You only want to keep these stripes and the duplicated base layer from earlier – Delete any excess layers from the layers panel.

Place the stripes on top of the base layer. (I’ve changed the colours of the stripes, which is my personal preference, you don’t have to do that.)

If the stripes are behind the base layer, right click and select ‘Move to Front’ – Unfortunately Cricut Design Space doesn’t, as yet, have an Offset tool, so in order to create an effect similar to an offset tool.

Select the Base layer, hold down Shift+Alt, using the arrow icon to the bottom right of the bounding box, click and drag the shape, until you are happy with the ‘outline’ around the stripe layer.

Select the Base Layer and Stripes and click Slice. You want to be left with a shape that is similar to the shape in the picture below right. – Delete any excess Sliced layers. (All that should be left is the newly sliced stripe layer)

3; Draw some circles and overlap them, similar to what is shown below, these are going to be the ‘icing’ for our cupcake. Once you are happy with the positioning of your circles, select them and click weld.

Duplicate the Stripe Layer and Icing Layer. Select the duplicated stripe layer, click on the contour tool and click on all the stripes, click contour. You’ll now be left with a solid shape.

Select the newly ‘Solid’ Base shape and the ‘icing’, click on slice. Discard the top half of the sliced images, so you left with the on base layer. – Put the solid layer to one side

Duplicate the icing one more time. Select the Stripe base layer and the ‘icing’ Layer, Select slice. For this one, keep only the stripe base layer (as well as the duplicated ‘icing’)

Position the remaining icing layer on top of the stripe layer – Like a jigsaw.

4; To create a simple cherry for the top of our cupcake, draw two ovals using the circle tool. Position them similarly to what is shown in the image below. Select both shapes and weld.

Place the ‘Cherry’ on top of our cupcake. Rotate it if you want it on an angle.

Once you are happy with the cherries position, Duplicate the cherry, select the original cherry and the ‘icing’ – Click slice. Delete the excess cherry and icing.

Position the duplicated cherry in the gap shown.

All that’s left to do it to add some sprinkles by using the square tool to create some tiny rectangles, and your cupcake is complete.
